Your builder's licence: staying compliant as you grow

Licensing rules differ by state and by the value of work. A refresher on keeping yours in good standing.

The Builder Times Newsroom·25 Sept 2025

A patchwork of rules

Building licensing in Australia is administered state by state, with different categories, thresholds and obligations. Work that needs a licensed builder in one jurisdiction may sit under a different category in another, and the value of work often determines what's required.

More than a piece of paper

Beyond holding the right class of licence, builders may face financial requirements, continuing obligations and insurance conditions — particularly as the value of work rises. Some states assess financial capacity for higher-value licences.

Why it matters commercially

An unlicensed or lapsed licence isn't just a compliance risk — in many jurisdictions it can affect your legal right to recover payment. Keeping your licence current, and understanding your category limits, is basic business protection.

Check your state

Rules change, so confirm the current requirements with your state's building regulator rather than relying on how things worked a few years ago.
